The good news: Filing for a tax extension in New Jersey only takes a few clicks. The bad news: You’ve still got to pay at least 80 percent of your state tax obligation by tax day — Monday, April 18 in 2016.
The worst news: You should really pay for the whole thing.
According to the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, if you have been granted an extension to file your federal form your automatically get an extension to file your New Jersey form, provided that 80 percent of your tax liability to the state has been paid or withheld.
And although that 80 percent threshold makes you eligible for an extension on the paperwork, it doesn’t let you off the hook for making your tax payment on time. You still need to pay your full tax liability by the end of tax day — otherwise, you’ll be subject to penalties and interest.
If you haven’t paid 80 percent by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, you can’t get the extension at all.
